Nurturing

The Merriam-Webster free on-line definition for nurture is as follows, with my personal additions in bold:
1. to supply with nourishment for your soul
2. to educate from within
3. to further develop the natural gift that we are
Is this important? It is in my life! I’m the nurturer in my family. Whose job is it in your family? It’s a very important role and not always solely taken by the “Mom”. It’s terribly difficult these days to slow down, relax, nourish, recharge and replenish the self. But someone has to do it! I do it in my family and it works for us. I have a really great, organized system of obtaining the most healthy foods and items for my household, and on most days at 5pm, I choose to stop whatever I am doing and enjoy my time creating in the kitchen. It calms and centers me; it makes my house a home and fills my family’s heart and bellies with love. This act can come in many forms; from growing your own organic veggies/herbs for cooking homemade meals, to sitting down together for any kind of dinner with no distractions (yes-no electronics). Life is busy, so let’s get practical! This can sound like a huge time commitment, but is it? Really? I have to fight the inner “mind” voice that says, “you “should” be—fill in the blank.” I have to go with the heart voice that knows my truth. Nurturing brings me to my heart voice and that voice says to nurture, and so the cycle goes. My brain is so powerful, there is a part that wants to sabotage the whole process and keep me “shoulding” all over my self. So, let’s be Sandra Lee to the 100th degree. What can you do right now to practice nurturing for you and/or your family? It doesn’t have to cost anything. It doesn’t even have to be food related; although vital for nurturing.
• Close your beautiful eyes and breathe in to a count of 8 and out to 10–5 times; or practice getting there. Take a wonderful journey inside your body. Go to places that call to you, stay there and ask questions–with no judgment.
• Un-cross your legs and envision your connection to the middle of the earth and the universe abound. Do some Kundalini wing flapping or QiGong. Just fill your tank and prime your pump!
• Get on the floor alone or with your family and mimic your pet? It will get you present, connected and probably laughing. Sweating and laughing have got to be the 2 most important things in life.
• Turn off all electronics, unless they are helping you in the cooking process.
• Funky, fun, conversation invoking dinner napkins—cloth or paper (recycle)
• Adding your own home grown basil to take-out pizza; a little plant on the window sill can go a long way. Don’t wait for the BIG garden.
• Eat outside, anywhere, just out doors. Be messy!
• 5 o’clock news; that is the LAST thing I want to be watching after a long day. Do you “think” it relaxes you? Do you really?
There will never be a better time than now; live amongst your chaos! There will never be a time when all is done—unless you’re dead of course. Then…too late! I’m all for organization and simplification, but not when it takes over. Put down the label maker and join yourself. Happy night!

You Live WHERE???

I had been told about perceived class systems and “snobtown” discrimination when I first moved to CT 7 years ago. I chose to believe that it didn’t exist, because firstly, I thought it was absolutely absurd, and secondly, because I hadn’t witnessed it for myself. But like everything…things change.

I have had some disturbing awareness as of late; with some of these occurrences happening at celebratory events for friends within weeks of each other. It was friends of friends that displayed the behavior in many ways. Here are 2 highlights. One person actually said to me, “There goes Lynn again, representin’ (fill in the blank with your home town).” At another event, a man said to me, “Anytown? You look to good to be from Anytown!” Just then his full glass of red wine fell directly into his lap (all by itself). I guess the Universe expressed its opinion? As he was wiping up I told him that he might give Anytown another try sometime.

Then in passing, I overheard a report from the TV news my husband was watching. A citizen was making a comment about an MTA issue to the MTA Board, he said, “Where did they raise human garbage like you?” WOAW, I know you’re upset that you may have train delays, but come on?! Human garbage? Raising human garbage? Raising human garbage in a particular place?

I was insulted, sad and angry. Not for me, I know my worth, but for other people. How can people live this way, I thought? Discrimination is a crime against humanity; discrimination based on house location has got to be ignorance in a class all its own. Then I realized that the more I despised this behavior; the more I was starting to discriminate against the very people discriminating. Yikes, it was working. Discrimination was feeding discrimination.

That’s when I forgave them and went back to focusing on my belief that we are inherently good. We are all inherently good and just need to slow down and hear the internal voice of goodness before we speak. It’s not easy, this world moves fast. And thank “goodness” today I know that discrimination is learned, therefore it can be unlearned. Speaking of goodness; check out Desmond Tutu’s new book on goodness; it’s a great one.

The contest results for the OWN show are almost out and I have felt like a winner from the very beginning. Just having the ability to submit a dream/reality for competition was enough, and then to have the support of over 100 people who: voted, referred me to friends and businesses, called, emailed, and took it upon themselves to be my pseudo campaign managers—there is no doubt—I have won and it’s because of you! Over 3,000 votes and I started a month after the contest began and limited people to 1 vote per day (who knew it would be unlimited???). I don’t think the quality of that 3,000 could feel or be any better. My local town paper even did a story about the contest and me. Considering the length of the phone interview, I believe the reporter did a great job capturing my essence. Here is the newspaper article (my part is at the end in bold) and my audition submission (at the very bottom); for the history books.

Two locals vie for spot on Oprah network

Two local women are vying for the chance to host their own television show in a contest called “Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star.” The winner will host a talk show produced by OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network beginning in 2011.
Both Alexandra Christofor and Lynn Tempesta, who currently reside in Norwalk, believe the public needs to hear what they have to offer. They each, like over 4,000 other participants, submitted an audition video through Oprah’s website, where viewers can vote for their favorites.
The competitors who receive the most votes, as well as finalists from live casting calls throughout the country, will then proceed to the next round of auditions in Los Angeles. From this pool of finalists, ten will be selected to appear on a television reality competition show. The winner will become the host of a talk show on OWN. Christofor, who grew up in Norwalk, believes her show would reflect a welcome departure from the current trend on television.
“A lot of shows on the big networks just promote a partying theme,” she said. “This would be different.”
The premise of Christofor’s show is helping young people pursue their goals. With past experience in nonprofit youth organizations, she would like to expand her reach to more young people across the country.
“If they had a dream that they wanted to pursue, we would create a forum where they could make that dream happen,” she said. “I would want it to be large and small scale. It would really range in a wide direction of big dreams and local projects.”
In her audition video, Christofor tried to capture the diversity that she hopes to incorporate into her own television show someday.
“I just found them and asked if they wanted to be in the video,” she said of her guests. “One wanted to be an opera singer. Another guy wanted to do zoology. They’re very passionate people.”
Similarly, Tempesta hopes to give people a voice on a larger scale.
After moving to Norwalk seven years ago from Long Island, Tempesta began using her corporate background to support companies and individuals who can benefit the community. Through her business, Tempesta! Promotions, Tempesta acts as a spokesperson for people and companies throughout the tri-state area. She also appears in a video blog series introducing guests who she believes offer valuable services to the world.
“I showcase people, their ideas, and their projects,” she said. “I talk about something related to them as far as their values; something valuable about them.”
According to Tempesta, the project reflects a natural progression in her career. With an economics degree and an MBA, she has worked in banking, finance, and human resource consulting.
“I have a good background in the corporate world,” said Tempesta. “Now I’m more interested in the people side of things.”
For Tempesta, entering the OWN competition seemed like a logical next step in her career. Her video blog closely resembles her vision for the television show if she were to win the competition.
“An episode would look like the woman who is going to be arriving at my house in ten minutes,” Tempesta said from her home last Thursday morning.
“She teaches a type of yoga and it’s a really wonderful service because it elevates your mood to another level. Its things like that that add value to the world.”
Tempesta said she is motivated by the potential for adding value rather than by gaining popularity.
“I don’t look at the number of viewers because that’s not what it’s about,” she said of her blog. “I feel like my ultimate goal is to do this for the community.”
Despite their different approaches, Christofor and Tempesta both believe they can be powerful television hosts if given the opportunity.
“I think I just need to be exposed in a big way,” said Christofor.
Tempesta feels equally driven to succeed in the contest.
“I uplift people and uplift businesses,” she said. “It feels like a calling.”
